Research Notes


Game wardens are in charge of enforce all state and federal laws regarding  boating, hunting and fishing in their patrol area. Game wardens may also have to  perform the seizure of any fish or game caught in violation of the fish and  wildlife code.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average national salary for  fish and game wardens as of 2009 was roughly $54,940. The average hourly pay for fish and game wardens was $26.42 per hour.

5 Steps to become a Game Warden ( To sum things up)


  Step 1-(Start Research) May 2010, fish and game wardens made an average annual salary of $55,650. The top five paying states for fish and game wardens were Maryland, Nevada, Washington, Wisconsin and Texas.

Step 2 (Finish High School)-  During high school you can research and prepare for this career by taking natural science courses, like biology, chemistry and environmental science. Electives in computer science, math, physical education and criminal justice may also be beneficial. You may also gain insight into the career through shadowing a fish and game warden.

Step 3- ( Earn a Degree)They really stressing having a degree if you are trying to go in the field of a Game Warden. You should probably take a degree program in biology, criminal justice, wildlife management, ecology, conservation biology or fisheries conservation. Some college programs also offer a law enforcement track in conservation programs, which would be acceptable training for a position as a fish and game warden.


Step 4- (Find Entry-Level Employment)In order to become a Fish and Game Warden, you would usually need to start in an entry-level position within the state's fish and game, natural resources or wildlife department. To qualify for a position, you may undergo written and physical testing. After being accepted into a position, you may complete a training program focusing on the law enforcement principles and procedures of the job.


Step 5- (Become a fish and game warden)Upon successful completion of any required training and working within the department for a minimum number of years, you may qualify to advance to the position of fish and game warden. Promotions are competitive and based upon experience, performance and written and verbal examinations. You will also likely undergo drug testing. Additional education may be required in some states, such as completion of a bachelor's degree program.

In training to become a Maine game warden you have to:
practice driving a car through a sharp corners
boxing in case you have to take someone down
practice your shooting
practice being a detective

A game warden must go through 6 months of training starting with 6 weeks of in house instruction.

In house instruction such as defensive tatics
how to protect yourself
feeling what it is like to be sprayed with pepper spray
Identifications on migratory birds

Game wardens can enforce federal laws
They have more authority then a state trooper they don't need a warrant to look through you car.


Wardens must be able to meet a physical ability standard, jog/walk over rough terrain, swim, be able to physically control and arrest law violators, operate a boat, and operate 2/4 wheel drive vehicles.
