How Could School Be Different?

How Could School Be Different

I know that ive only been in the high school for a couple days but the classes seem a litttle long. At the middle school (http://wms.svrsu.org/) we had shorter classes, they were around 50 minutes. That was much better. You could have more classes in the day. You might not get as much information in if you had a longer class but there would be a smaller amount of kids that are board. If you are sitting in a chair for over an hour you are going to get board, no matter what what your doing. I've heard many students complaining about the time. Maybe you could shorten the classes. That way we could be learning in a bigger range of classes. If students had shorter classes that means there is a better chance that students would pay attention because the class does not drag out. You would have to go through things such as homework or other assignments quicker so there would not be time to goof off. How would this change the school? Well this would allow students to have more classes a day and even a year. That means they would have learned a wider range of classes a day. You could also have more credits every year.
I also have another thing that we could change in our school community is take away computers. They are a huge distraction, even though they help us out a lot they are still a huge distraction. Some students use them to help them work, but then there is a huge amount of students that use these laptops in a wrong way during school and out of school. Students play games, look up stuff the you shouldn't do when your at school. Then when students have a assignment that you have to work on, on your computer there is a lot of kids that play games when you should be working on a assignment. Then when it's due they end up not having it done they end up failing that class or that assignments. I have seen it hundreds of times. So if we take computers out then there wouldn't be as big as a distraction(http://www.infostormgadget.com/2012/02/27/pros-and-cons-of-using-laptops-in-classrooms/)
Thats the reason why I dont think we need computers in school systems.

Maine Game Wardens

All my life I have been interested in Maines wildlife, from animals to fish to the trees. In the last couple years I have found a job that does that . That job is to be a Maine Game Warden. I believe becoming a Maine Game Warden will allow me to do what I love to do and that is to be around nature. A Game Warden's job is to protect the wildlife from the people who are taking advantage of it and doing illegal stuff towards these animals. They enforce the laws of hunting, fishing and trapping.

Game Wardens play a huge role in todays world because if we did not have them there would be a much smaller population of all animals. We would have less animals because people take advantage of the animals. So if we did not have Game Wardens some of these would probably go extinct.
To become a Maine Game Warden you have to be pretty knowlegable regarding fishing, hunting and the outdoors. Also you have to be able to work alone in remote places and be open to moving to a different part of Maine. To be a Game Warden you have to have a High School diploma and be 21 of age.

WHS Mascot

Last year our mascot was taken away from our Community and for a while we had no mascot.
Our old mascot was called the Redskins and most community members and students were proud to call themselves the Redskins. Certain people thought we were disrespecting the Indian culture. We were not being disrespectful at all, we were proud to be Redskins. Some of us still believe that we are Redskins and always will be. Its not just a mascot to us, its way more then that. The mascot that represents all of us in this community. I haven't heard of one good reason of how we are disrespecting the "Redskins." Are we really disrespecting the Redskins and if we are how? All I have heard is the Redskins are disrespectful but are we really?  It's not like we are dressing up as Indians and making fun of the culture.  No, we are just being represented by there name and in no way is that making fun of there culture. If I was an Indian, I would be proud that I am being represented in such a strong community.  I would be glad that I am still being remember. I think of an Indian as a fighter, a strong fighter. That's what we are.  We fight till the end in everything we do, it might be sports or school work. It could be a variety of things but we never give up on anything.
Now our mascot is a Wolverine. Really a Wolverine? That's the best you could think of? Do Wolverines even live in Maine? The picture to the right, is the new mascot for the WHS. I know thats a terrible mascot, right? Exactly what I was thinking. What's that..... on the front of its face, its all red, is that blood? Does that mean we eat our opponents or did we just viciously kill something? To me, thats pretty disrespectful to the animal saying that a wolverine is a very vicious animal. Now if this mascot represents us its also saying that we are vicious. I think the Redskins mascot meaning is that we are fighters and never give up. Thats way better then us being Wolverines meaning we are vicious people. Don't you agree? Our own mascot doesn't even live in our state, so how can we be represented as something that lives in a different state, that doesn't make sense. Why can't we come up with a mascot that represents the town of Wiscasset like the Redskins did?

This is our real mascot the Wiscasset Redskins, the picture to the right. This picture here is not being disrespectful in anyway. Its just a picture of an Indian. The picture above is showing its teeth and has red on its face. To me that represents blood, and it looks like its ready to attack something, thats disrespecting the animal and the students of WHS.

I along with many community members will always remember the Wiscasset Redskins and the famous Tomahawk theme song being played at many sporting events.
